Morocco Makes Audacious Bid for the 2026 World Cup
Morocco recently made a bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The bid will challenge the North American bid of a combination of the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The African country has failed to secure the contest four previous times.
Is it a good idea to let another smaller country host one of the biggest sporting events in the world? Morocco has some advantages but also a lot of disadvantages.
Morocco is a smaller country, which means there is only one time zone. This makes it easier for players in a sense of travel and time changes. If a player plays in Miami one day and then has to play again five days later in San Francisco, his body will feel different.
Bringing the World Cup to a country like Morocco expands the knowledge of the culture and lifestyle of the country to the rest of the world. When South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup it was very successful and the country made itself known to the world.
Qatar, the host for the 2022 World Cup has given support to Morocco.
However, the disadvantages of Morocco’s bid to host the World Cup increase the North American bid.
Morocco does not have a public plan for the event itself. Officials seem to not have a clue on how they will tackle it.
The North American powerhouses have been planning for a couple years already. Morocco is very behind and the organization could knock the country out of the race for the fifth time.
Brazil held the World Cup in 2014, and the country is left in disarray. Stadiums built just for the contest are now used as storage for busses. The same thing could happen in Morocco.
Morocco does not have many venues that can be used for the World Cup, whereas the United States, Mexico and Canada have countless stadiums that could be slightly upgraded for the tournament.
The financial capabilities of Morocco is also a strong concern. Millions of dollars will be spent in preparation for the event. This time of money can put a country into serious debt. The three North American countries have the financial backing in order to host and execute the event well.
What kind of live streaming can Morocco provide? Will they be broadcasting the event possibly in the new video format of 4k quality?
The United States is known very well for their sports broadcasting. Companies like Fox Sports, NBC Sports and ESPN will all be broadcasting the event.
Everyone knows about the recent scandals and corruption of FIFA. This corruption led to South Africa hosting the World Cup in 2010. If Morocco were to win the bid over the heavily-favored North American countries, many people would believe corruption has taken over FIFA again.
That being said, the bid should go to North America. Soccer, although big in Mexico, is not very popular in the U.S. and Canada. An event like the World Cup could light the fire to bring soccer to a whole new level of popularity.
With the event so far away, it is easy to believe that a lot of things can change between now and the summer of 2026. However, the decision will be made earlier in order for the host country to prepare.
The final decision will be announced on the eve of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow June 13.
